Abstract : This paper discusses the conditions for the integration of a software companion into a distance training system. The study context is that of Croisières, a device to teach French which offers the learner integrated self-learning resources and a distant tutoring service. The main questions raised when integrating a software companion into such a device can be answered by defining the various roles that the companion plays for the learner, by defining a written dialogue that can be established between companion and learner, and by defining the companion's capacities for explanation. This paper presents the iterative design method used to define Clavie, a software companion for users of Croisières as well as the results obtained: validation of the role of Clavie within Croisières, a first corpus of exchanges between companion and learners, and a comprehension model of the learners' statements. Further research should lead to the specification of knowledge that must be acquired by the software agent in order to diversify answers provided for the learner.
