Effet de deux types d'aide préalable sur la compréhension orale en langue étrangère

Abstract : Listening and understanding in a foreign language : Effects of the linguistic expertise and of the presence of pictures. In a prior study we have shown that the presence of pictures during the listening of an English dialogue hinders its comprehension by intermediate level students of English as a foreign language. The
presents study aims to examine the effects of two kinds of prior helps both on the oral comprehension activity (on-line) and on its products evaluated by an
immediate recall test (off-line). These two kinds of helps consist in a) the prior presentation of the words and the syntactic structure the most difficult of the
dialogue (linguistic help) and b) the prior presentation of the fifteen pictures of the
dialogue with a very general abstract of the dialogue in French (semantic help). The results show that the two kinds of help lead to different effects. The linguistic help leads to a facilitation of the on-line activity (less pauses and less re-listening) but
have no effect on the representation constructed by the subjects, whereas the semantic help leads to more pauses and more re-listening but to a representation of better quality.
