Multimodality in Second language Conversations Online: looking for a methodology
Abstract
This chapter analyses electronically-mediated multimodal learner conversations with the aim of theorising the functioning of communicative affordances in multimodal environments. It innovates in suggesting that such data can best be understood through the synergistic use of three existing theoretical frameworks that had not hitherto been brought together: conversation analysis, and the social semiotics of Kress and van Leeuwen on one hand, and Scollon on the other
